It was a quiet enough night, at least to start out with. Stars, twinkling in their eons-long vigils formed their usual patterns in the darkened sky. Then it lit up with a brilliant blue for a split second, very much like a lightning bolt, save for that it was cloudless, before fading to a distant green glow. An hour later, the illuminated atmosphere still hadn't gone away.
At first, one might easily have mistaken the light for an aurora, which it was in part. But this was no ordinary aurora. It was a bellwether of things to come as it changed colors through the whole night, at one point going from a brilliant white to an unnatural black, which seemed to suck in light rather than emit it.
As the night drew on, it only grew more intense, with every color represented in the kaleidoscope in the sky. Those up late and alert watched the show in awe. Some even hastily organized parties to view the incredible display of natural magnetic interaction. And it was at that point the most miraculous event yet happened that night. The aurora began to rain, with streaks of light making their ways to the planet's lower atmosphere.
These streamers of light soon reached the ground, and that was where the problem lay. As they made landfall, they threw up dirt, rocks and debris as they damaged the occasional building. Needless to say, chaos soon broke out as the damage mounted. And, landing in its own small crater at your character's feet, lies a small gemstone of excellent cut.
Also, Please pick the color of the gem.
